The proper care of nipples – let’s chat at #ecowed Twitter Party

Who thinks about their nipples, unless you experience a cold breeze in a thin t-shirt or you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Otherwise, we mostly ignore the nipples, although we may think about our breasts. So let’s talk nipples!

Have you ever wondered what those white bumps are on your nipples? Well, they are the visible parts of all the oil glands that surround your nipples. They basically keep your nipple skin from getting too dry. If you have ever squeezed one (confess), then you may have freaked out by the discharge – sort of like a zit. Well, that discharge is excess oil that you’ve forced out.

Got any other questions – like how to handle sore nipples while breastfeeding? Come chat with us for #ecowed. This week’s #ecowed Twitter party will be sponsored by Earth Mama Angel Baby and we’ll be talking all things nipple related. We’ll be focusing on nipple care pre, during and post breastfeeding. For example, we’ll chat about nine things your nipples wish you knew about them! Confess – have you used cabbage leaves to help with engorged breasts? I did – although I chilled them first to provide some cooling relief.

But if you didn’t, aren’t or won’t breastfeed, don’t let that stop you from joining the party. Your nipples still need some attention. And Earth Mama Angel Baby’s certified vegan Natural Nipple Butter isn’t just for nipples. I love to use it on my elbows and feet to keep them smooth. I even use it on my husband’s elbows, although he doesn’t know if it Natural Nipple Butter. And it is free of phthalates, 1,4 dioxane and other not so nice ingredients. It is also free of lanolin and instead uses calendula extract.

Join us on February 17, 2010 at 10 pm Eastern time for a fabulous and educational #ecowed party. Be sure to leave a comment below to be eligible to win one of the absolutely fabulous prizes from Earth Mama Angel Baby:

  1. Earth Mama Angel Baby Breastfeeding Support Kit;
  2. Two (2) Natural Nipple Butters;

HootSuite Super Powers for Small Business Professionals

I think I’m in love

I’m too busy to use 15 different programs to get my social networking done effectively. I work full time and still need to squeeze in good quality interactions with my blog readers, customers and colleagues.

HootSuite to the rescue

Ahhh, HootSuite.  Such sweet music to my overwhelmed ears.  And it gets even better by the day as more useful tools are added.   HootSuite has been one of the most widely used Twitter web apps and I’d venture to say that those numbers will increase sharply with their recently launched iPhone app.  Now small business owners can manage several aspects of social media from any computer or while on the go.

HootSuite’s super powers

  • Allows you to add multiple social media accounts
  • Supports Twitter, Facebook, Facebook Pages, Ping.fm and Wordpress.com Blogs
  • Twitter stats for all URL’s shortened using their ow.ly service
  • Keyword tracking with separate columns
  • Saved searches
  • Twitter lists function (which can be used as a group type setting)
  • Option to schedule tweets for a later date/time
  • Browser bookmarklet allows you to tweet instantly, schedule a tweet and shorten links – all with the click of a button
  • HootSuite provides desktop apps to compliment the web app too: Mac and PC programs, Chrome and Firefox extensions, even Greasemonkey scripts

My favorite super power of all is HootSuite’s surprisingly versatile iPhone app for Twitter. I’ve tried many different apps for Twitter and I come away with a handful of pros, along with a list of things I wish they could do. HootSuite has a few shortcomings too that the TweetDeck app makes up for, so I use them together to make quick work of my social media interactions. TweetDeck’s Facebook integration is a plus and its detailed group management tool rocks for following and retweeting my favorites. But overall, I find myself using the HootSuite app for everything else.

>>> The short of it – - HootSuite is a must for busy business owners looking to simplify and condense the time spent on social media marketing!  Grab your apps here and get started saving precious time and energy.

Give the Gift of Clean Laundry: Soapnuts

soapnuts laundrytreeLaundry, it is this never e-n-d-i-n-g  chore. We need clean clothing and we cannot walk around naked – even though I’ve thought of declaring a naked day just so I could catch up laundry!!! The best gift this holiday season for a mother, grandmother, dad who does or helps with laundry, housekeeper or shoot anyone because we all need clean clothes and laundry makes this possible:  SOAPNUTS!

What the heck are soapnuts (I know you are thinking this right now)? Well, according to Laundytree.com:

* They are simply a dried fruit — 100% totally natural.

* They are organically grown and are free of harsh chemicals, so they are incredibly gentle. (This makes them especially great for those with sensitive skin — including babies and those that suffer from allergies, eczema, and psoriasis).

* They’re totally biodegradable, so they’re better for the environment than regular detergent.

* They’re ant microbial, so they’re even good for septic and greywater systems.

* They are low-sudsing — exactly what you need for HE (or high-efficiency) washers.

You might be thinking:   “Fruit in my washer, nuts…you have got to be kidding me” ? Shih, calm down – they rock and your clothes will smell so good! crying-statue[1]At this Wednesday’s #ecowed Twitter party on November 18, 2009, we will tackle a very difficult subject – losing a baby, whether by miscarriage or at full term. The holiday season can be exceptionally difficult for those that have lost a baby. And trying to reach out and comfort those friends or family members can feel awkward and uncomfortable.

What do you say to a woman who has lost a baby?

How do you offer comfort?

Our sponsor, Earth Mama Angel Baby, has a wonderful website to help answer those questions – Healing Hearts, Baby Loss Comfort. EMAB created Baby Loss Comfort to help provide real support as well as emotional comfort and resource information for women who have experienced baby loss from miscarriage to stillbirth.

Before I had my son, I suffered two miscarriages. The first was very early on – basically, right after I had a positive home pregnancy test kit result. But the second was at 10 and 1/2 weeks or so, after I had seen the heartbeat during my ultrasound exam.  I was devastated. However, I really had a difficult time expressing the loss because nobody knew I was pregnant. I started bleeding at work, very early in the morning, and I couldn’t really tell people I was losing a baby that I didn’t have yet, if that makes sense. I had to grieve, but I really couldn’t.

EMAB’s Baby Loss Comfort site has tons of resources to help women and their partners that have lost a baby, as well as information for friends and family. There is also a remembrance page where people can post their memorials, and it is heart wrenching to read. But oddly comforting. And, finally, there are specially designed gifts to heal and help those that have lost a baby.

Unfortunately, sources vary, but many estimate that approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage; and some estimates are as high as 1 in 3. If you include loss that occurs before a positive pregnancy test, some estimate that 40% of all conceptions result in loss.

Based primarily on information provided by the March of Dimes:

  • There are about 4.4 million confirmed pregnancies in the U.S. every year;
  • 900,000 to 1 million of those end in pregnancy losses EVERY year;
  • More than 500,000 pregnancies each year end in miscarriage (occurring during the first 20 weeks);
  • Approximately 26,000 end in stillbirth (considered stillbirth after 20 weeks);
  • Approximately 19,000 end in infant death during the first month; and
  • Approximately 39,000 end in infant death during the first year.

The statistics are a little scary, but they show that we all probably know somebody that has experienced baby loss. So, come help us talk about this difficult subject on November 18, 2009, at a sponsored #ecowed party from 10 to 11 pm Eastern. And yes, we will have prizes. Just RSVP below to be entered and join us during the party using the #ecowed hashtag.

The Twitter #hashtag Tango: Dance at Your Own Risk

Recently I attended an event hosted by a PR firm for its client Euro Pro.  Euro Pro makes Shark cleaning products and have just launched a new product called the Ninja (a food processor/blender) with the Food Network’s Robin Miller’s backing. I accepted this trip for three reasons:

1.  I wanted to see other bloggers and network – I love doing this.
2.  I like Robin Miller and her healthy cooking strategies and I was interested in a product she is promoting,  especially if it will cut down on my prep. time in the kitchen.
3.  I wanted to learn more about how PR companies are interacting with bloggers and using social media for their clients.

The post discusses reason number 3 – PR companies, bloggers & social media. To read my review of steam cleaning chemical free cleaners and the Ninja, as well as the bloggers I met, subscribe to Green and Clean Mom for updates.

PR firms have been interacting with bloggers since my career began - some better than others. PR firms still pitch bloggers with “Dear Blogger” emails but many PR firms are attempting to learn more about how to interact with and market to bloggers and engage them. Most bloggers also use social media to interact with their audience. Many bloggers have a reach well beyond their blogs. Consequently, bloggers and their networks are even more appealing to companies. As a result, PR firms want to interact with bloggers who have large nets to cast as well as those perceived to have high integrity and disclosure. Events Like M2Moms and Blogger Business are two events that companies and firms are attending to learn more about ways to respect, treat and interact with the mom blogger and visa versa – we are all learning to navigate through these waters.

Is there a Risk?

Argentine couple dancing tango in Buenos AiresThe #Nestlefamily twitter/blogger firestorm amply illustrates that both the company as well as the blogger who decides to attend an event face risks. In the case of the Nestle incident, Nestle said it was just beginning to enter the social media scene and inviting bloggers to engage with it was the first step. I get that (I’m not commenting on any Nestle family history or the boycott) but a company taking a first step should not jump into the deep water not knowing how to swim. Obviously, such a compnay can quickly drown as Nestle did, and the poor bloggers felt like they needed to be life guards. While one blogger calls the hashtag created for the Nestle family event as  hijacked others wonder why Nestle wasn’t more responsible. Given Nestle’s history, if bloggers tweet that Nestle is wonderful and doing great things on a public space then shouldn’t reactions be expected? It all gets very messy but there is lots that can be learned.

A very simple lesson: Companies just starting using a hashtag and announcing a big event with a blog post MUST have a social media plan in place and understand the goals of the event. Nestle did not seem to know what it wanted – it said it was just looking for input from a select group of bloggers. If that was the case, then do it privately without a big splash in public forums. It also said it was trying to create a buzz. That’s wonderful, but don’t try to create a buzz before you are ready to respond in the social media arena. Keep in mind that when a company or blogger says anything on Twitter it becomes public.

For bloggers this is becoming more common, these paid trips and hastag events for buzz. This means that perhaps it is catching on as a cheaper way for a company to create buzz, get feedback and catch the publicity wave. Like myself, bloggers need to have reasons for why they are going and defend those reasons. Bloggers also need to do some due diligence. In my opinion, a paid trip does not equal an agreement for loyalty and in my case I have never agreed, promised or signed anything to say I will do something for the company or firm, other than attend the event. Granted, I have disclosure obligations should I say anything, positive or negative.

The risk for the blogger is wasting time and being under fire for attending an event. The blogger is also at risk for how she defends herself and her decision as well as how she promotes the company and use the hashtag(s). Bloggers have to really think about how they act, promote themselves and engage with their own blog community and the companies and firms wanting their help.

What are your thoughts on this new social media tango that is happening between bloggers and companies??

ecoad Have you heard of @ecostoreusa and their eco friendly, plant-based household cleaning products? From their ecommerce website:

Our products also help to ensure value for the dollar for our customers. We know it can be expensive to buy natural or organic products but we’ve found a way to safely super-concentrate our formulations. Our super-concentrates means that a little really does go a long way – saving you money by cutting down significantly on cost per use.

Now available in the USA market, ecostore USA is partnered with New Zealand-based ecostore; a mainstream choice in consumer products that help people throughout New Zealand, Australia, and select locations in Asia and the UK, take better care of their health and homes. For even more information about our New Zealand partners, visit their site at www.ecostore.co.nz.

ecostore NZ was founded more than 15 years ago by Melanie and Malcolm Rands from their home in an eco village in New Zealand.

All of the families that lived in the farm based eco village shared a commitment to organic growing and healthy living, making this an ideal environment in which a young, environmentally conscious business could thrive. Each household in the village was responsible for their own waste water, which quickly highlighted the problems caused by using regular supermarket cleaning products that relied heavily on cheap, petroleum-based, synthetic ingredients.

The founder, Malcolm Rands (EcoMan), will be joining us this Wednesday @ecostoreusa to help educate us on theirmalcolm-by-shelves company, products and to learn more about Malcolm Rands whose known as “EcoMan”. Malcolm was a stay at home dad who wanted safer products for his family AND the planet. Malcolm knows “ingredients”, he knows parenthood, eco-friendly living! Join us for another fun #ecowed party and see if you can stump EcoMan!

PRIZES:

3 $50 ecostore USA e-certificates to try the products that will work for you and your family.

ecostore USA is also giving away monthly prizes on their Facebook Fan page as well as a prize that will be drawn October 1, 2009 for anyone that becomes a Fan of their new Facebook quiz.

Earth Mama Angel Baby #EcoWed Twitter Party – Learn about PEG-100 Stearate

earth mama angel baby

earth mama angel baby

Come join us from a fun #ecowed Twitter party with Earth Mama Angel Baby. We’ll be talking about what’s in our bath and beauty products, particularly PEG-100 Stearate. The party happens this Wednesday, September 23, 2009, from 10 to 11 pm Eastern. Follow @3greenangels to get in on the opportunity to win some prizes from Earth Mama Angel Baby.

Not familiar with Earth Mama Angel Baby? EMAB’s product line is the only line for babies and pregnant mamas to have scored all zeros on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetic safety database.

Why is what we use on our skin important? Well, our skin is our largest organ, and much of what we apply to it is absorbed by our bodies and transferred to the rest of our body. For example, a study found that the concentration of hormone-disrupting phthalate metabolites in the urine of babies was directly related to the number of personal care and bath products applied to those babies.

At the Twitter party, we’ll be talking specifically about PEG-100 Stearate. What the heck is PEG-100 Stearate? Well, the PEG part of that description stands for polyethylene glycol. And, before we go on, PEG is not the same as ethylene glycol, found in antifreeze. PEG-100 Stearate is primarily used by the cosmetics and beauty care industry as an emollient (help to soften and lubricate skin), an emulsifier (help to mix oil and water), and a penetrant (help other ingredients penetrate skin). It is made by combining natural oils (often palm or coconut) with Stearic Acid to form a water-soluble ester. It can also be made as a synthetic polymer made by combining ethylene oxide and fatty acids.

The cosmetic industry maintains that PEG-100 Stearate is safe. But, PEGs, including PEG-100 Stearate, can contain harmful impurities. One potential impurity is ethylene oxide, known to increase the incidences of uterine and breast cancers and of leukemia and brain cancer according to the National Toxicology Program. Also, PEGs can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen amd PAHs, known to increase the risk of breast cancer; lead; iron; and arsenic. They also should not be used on broken or damaged skin.

So, before the party, go look at your products, particularly those used on your baby, and see which have PEG-100 Stearate. And then let’s talk more about what it means. See you Wednesday, September 23, 2009 from 10 to 11 pm Eastern, using the hashtag #ecowed.
