Top 5 Reasons for Using DISQUS Comments on Your WordPress Blog

I learned about the DISQUS comments plugin from two of my favorite social media mentors, Chris Brogan and UnMarketing.  It was super easy to install and quickly became one of my all-time favorites!  DISQUS is really more than a simple plugin for handling comments – it’s a social networking system that saves you a tremendous amount of time and energy!

Top 5 Reasons to Use DISQUS:

  • Threaded discussions allow your reply to be nested (or inline) with the original comment, keeping everything more organized for your blog readers.   On any blog post with a lot of repsonse, this is absolutely necessary to help your readers make sense of the discussion.
  • You can have every comment left on your blog post sent to your inbox.  Then you just hit reply to have your comment posted automatically to the blog, allowing you to participate in real time as the conversation develops.  You can also choose to have your replies emailed to the commenter, which invites them back to continue the discussion.
  • The profiles that commenters create in DISQUS are shared across other blogs using the system.  So commenters will be recognized by DISQUS without having to create whole new profile and they”ll have the same avatar and identity.  Commenters can also sign in using other social media profiles to leave comments (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook), and will be given the option to quickly and easily link the comment back to their social media profiles (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook)
  • All mentions on Facebook and Twitter about the post itself will be tracked and added to the bottom of the post
  • DISQUS allows you to monitor, edit and respond to comments on multiple blogs from a single dashboard

How to Use and Install DISQUS

Seems like such a complex system would require dealing with countless issues and complicating programming when shifting to DISQUS, doesn’t it?  Well no, it doesn’t.  It’s shockingly easy to install . . .

All you have to do is register for a free account with DISQUS and install the plugin.  Then you can easily choose your display options and rules, make simple styling changes, and import your other comments. When ready, it will remove your current commenting system and replace it with DISQUS.  So it seriously only takes 5 minutes of work!

*NOTE:  When you first install DISQUS, your comments may seem to disappear – but don’t worry – give it a little time and they appear in their whole new format soon!

  • Hey Alicia - Do you know if Disqus comments are now synced with your other comments (if using WP)? i.e. When I tested DISQUS six months ago, I had to double moderate all posts since doing itt on Disqus didn't also affect my WP database. That made the option of removing the plugin at some point in the future a frightening proposition (having to re-moderate hundreds to thousands of comments would be a nightmare!)

I'd love any knowledge you've got on this one.

    Thanks!
  • Our CMS is Drupal and while we would get 1,000 of unique visitors every day, I was always amazed by the lack of comments we would get. When I implemented Disqus, we started getting a decent amount of comments. Sure, I am not happy that the Drupal user system is not seamlessly integrated with Disqus, but I'll accept that in order to get a good flow of comments on our site.
  • Thanks Giannii! And thanks for the info on comments disappearing - I almost had a heart attack the first time I imported and they all seemed to disappear - but they did show up soon enough. I guess I expected them to be there instantly and just wanted to make sure our readers didn't panic :)
  • Great post!

RE: to comments disappear: You can import your comments by going to WP Admin > Comments > Adv Options > Import

Also your comments on Wordpress locally sync with your database.
